Frequently Asked Questions

The CNIC is open to individuals who meet the following criteria:

  1. CKF member in good standing

  2. Member of a CKF dojo in good standing

  3. Canadian Citizen, Permanent Resident (PR), or has an active PR application with the Government of Canada

Who is eligible to compete?


There will be four divisions:

  1. Province — Selected representatives compete as a team of 3

  2. Region — Selected representatives compete as a team of 5, and as individuals

  3. Open — All other participants compete as individuals

  4. Embu — Participants with 6-Dan and 7-Dan compete in embu taikai

What divisions will be offered?


All matches shall be conducted in accordance with the All Japan Kendo Federation‘s (AJKF) “The Regulations of Iaido Shiai and Shipan / The Subsidiary Rules of Iaido Shiai and Shipan (Revised October 1, 1996)” and “Attachment: The Guidelines for Iaido Shiai and Shinpan (October 1, 1996 with Amendment June 2, 2023)”

Judging criteria will follow:

  1. Kaisetsu-sho, Instruction Manual Supplementary Information, Section #6

  2. Shiai/Shinpan Kisoku, Regulations, Section 2, Article 11, Item 1

  3. Shiai/Shinpan Saisoku, Subsidiary Rules, Article 7

How are competitors judged?


Yes, there is a Shinpan Seminar for 4-Dan and above on Friday, July 17 from 9am - 3pm at the Takahashi Dojo at 5 Melrose Ave, Ottawa, ON K1Y 1T8

There will also be a Pre-Taikai Seminar on Saturday, July 18, and Daily Recap Seminars on July 18 and 19.

Will there be a seminar?


Yes, spectators are welcome and can register here.

We ask that all spectators observe proper etiquette and follow event guidelines to maintain a respectful environment for competitors.
